Giving Back: Communities Connected at Home and Abroad

LiveDAYBREAK is a nonprofit community council that seeks to develop a vibrant and caring community committed to connecting, lifelong learning, embracing arts and diversity, healthy living and giving back. The council is the organization at Daybreak that hosts events and activities, plans programming at the Daybreak Community Center, provides educational and sustainability programs for residents, and coordinates charitable giving projects and fundraisers.

As noted, giving back is a large part of what the Daybreak community is all about. Members of the resident Steering Committee have chose the Daybreak to Debre Zeit as our communities ongoing international giving back project.

What is the Daybreak to Debre Zeit project?

After researching several local non-profit organizations that do work abroad, we found Ascend Alliance. Coming highly recommended by BYU and UofU, they truly focus on lifting others out of poverty through self-reliance and sustainability. This organization, with the help of our donations and matching donors, will facilitate the work we want to accomplish in our "sister community".

In the region we have "adopted," 80% are farmers and live on less than one dollar a day. The need is great. Most children do not attend school and only half live to see their 5th birthday due to preventable and treatable illness. With our help, we can give our sister community the tools to change lives for generations to come.

We will be raising funds in order to:

  • Build a school that will allow 500 children to attend school. The school day will be broken into two sessions with each session accommodating 250 children.
  • Build a well since water borne illness is one of the leading causes of death and must currently be fetched miles away, a strenuous task left to women and children that takes several hours out of each day.
  • Fund a local business, allowing the village to grow their economy, giving jobs and income to many. Training will be given and loans will be repaid in order to enable continuous loans to be given.
  • If you would like to donate to this cause, you may do so any time by contacting information@livedaybreak.com.

If you would like to connect with our giving back efforts and contribute to a project that will help those among the poorest in the world as well as those right here at home, please get your family and friends involved in the Giving Back Committee. We are looking for people of all ages who can help give ideas, plan, spread the word and see our projects through successfully. Any amount of service or donation is appreciated, no matter how small!
